Why the domain ROMandroid.ch?

ROM, as you may or may not already know, stands for ‘Read Only Memory’. Essentially, this is a built-in computer chip that you’ll find in all computers, laptops and smartphones that data can normally only be read from (and not written to).

However, this site takes a look at customizable ROM on Android devices. ROM on Android devices is basically the pre-installed firmware or the ‘operating system’ (OS) developed by Google. As this OS is open source, its code can be edited by individuals or groups in order to change how the device’s system works and behaves. This is also known as ‘modding’. These mods can provide additional features for a device, such as flashy new interfaces and graphics, different navigation techniques, improved battery performance and game/app hosting capabilities that were not previously available.

How to install custom ROM on your Android

Installing a custom ROM on your Android device is actually quite straightforward; you don’t need a degree in computer science to complete the process. In fact, all you really need is an Android device, a USB cable, access to another computer (desktop or laptop) and a connection to the internet. We do recommend that you back up all your original data before you start.

Below, ROMandroid.ch runs you through the basic steps:

1. Find a custom ROM online and make sure it’s compatible with your device

One of the best resources for finding custom Android ROMs online is the XDA forum (www.xda-developers.com). This site has a great deal of information, as well as links to download ROM files for all of the latest smartphone devices. Another way to find customized ROM files is to just search on Google – for example: “custom roms for Galaxy S8”

2. Download the ROM file (usually as a .ZIP file) to your computer.

You can save it to the computer’s internal memory or portable memory device. This can then be transferred to your phone’s SD card via USB. (Note: As most custom ROM files do not come with Google apps, you’ll also need to download the standard GApps package.)

3. Boot your smartphone into recovery mode.

This can normally be done by holding a combination of buttons on your phone such as ‘vol down + power’ for five seconds. A full and updated guide to activating recovery mode on all devices can be found at www.xda-developers.com/how-to-boot-to-recovery.

4. On the recovery navigation screen, click ‘Install’ and then ‘Install zip from sdcard’.

The installation will then start after you have followed the instructions when prompted to ‘flash to zip’.

5. Clear cache

After the .ZIP file has installed, head back to the main recovery menu and click on ‘wipe data / reset’ (or any equivalent). Then, tick the cache box to wipe this old data from your phone.

Now, your phone should automatically boot to the new custom ROM which you can enjoy once you turn the phone back on.

Popular Android Games

Below, ROMandroid.ch runs you through three of the most popular Android Games that can be downloaded onto your Android smartphone or tablet via Google’s ‘Play Store’.

1. Fifa 2017

Easily the most realistic football game on the market (and possibly the most realistic sports games full stop.) Developed by EA, this Android app version has more or less the same gameplay and graphics as the more popular PlayStation/Xbox versions. Do be aware that the controls can be a little bit awkward on Android devices with smaller screens, so a tablet might be preferred.

2. Asphalt 8: Airborne or Asphalt: Xtreme

The Asphalt game series has long been at the forefront of racing game apps on Android, and their latest title continues in that trend. The graphics are stunning, and the action is fast and fun. Although the game is free to download, there are lots of in-app purchases available to unlock new tracks and faster cars.

3. Limbo

A simple yet beautiful 2-dimensional platform game where you control a boy through a dark and eerie mystical world. Limbo was first made available on Xbox, but the Android version is just as fun – and best of all, free!
